The H.O.P.e stone is a small fossilized oyster, commonly called the Ram's Horn oyster. It is often mistaken as a snail due to its spiral-shape. These particular species were formerly named Exogyra Arietina. They lived in the early Cretaceous Period which was estimated to be over 100 million years ago, when Dinosaurs roamed the earth and swam the ancient seas. They were buried suddenly by major catastrophic events and their thick, heavy shells were well-preserved ever since. These bi-valve mollusks produced 'the gems of the sea' by transforming a tiny foreign substance that lodged in their shell into beautiful and precious pearls. An oyster would smother an irritating grain of sand with layers of a solid, pearly material called nacre.
The Ram's Horn oyster also produced a strong calcium cement, which was used to bond with their neighbors to form protecting reefs in shallow seas. In the contribution of their own substance, each oyster helped build and support their reef community. They provided for 'homeless' sea organisms like small fish and crabs seeking food and shelter or protection from their predators. The reef community also helped protect the bay shores from erosive waves, and, as filter feeders, they cleaned the bay waters which allowed bay florae to thrive with more oxygenating sunlight.
You could say they made "unshelfish" sacrifices for the good of the whole 'sea-cosystem'! So just as these oysters supported their community, Unshelfish.com is doing the same by making contributions to local charities from the sale of each H.O.P.e stone.
